HOMECOMING MEDIA COVERAGE

Most major Canadian news outlets are now picking up this CP wire piece on Saturday night's Queen's University Homcomeing party gone bad.

The news outlets include:

The Toronto Star.

The Globe and Mail.

CTV.ca.

Macleans.

Sun Media.

There is extensive coverage from the local Kingston Whig-Standard.

The media coverage is pretty uniformily negative, though the Whig has an article on the disgust of some students toward the actions of their peers.

To re-iterate the point I made below, this kind of media attention is exactly the type of thing that university administrators and civic officials hate. I wouldn't be suprised to see copies of the Toronto Star or Ottawa Sun waved around by irate citizens at town-council meetings.

Optimus Crime has another good set of links and quotes regarding the Homecoming debacle.

I can't resist! Queen's is the most snobby school in Canada, it is just no contest. The best thing about that is when admissions averages aren't the highest in Canada (UBC has beaten Queen's overall undergrad in the last few years), and shit like this brawl happens, and still in Snobbery 101 Queen's kids don't even need to take notes to blow every other post secondary institution in Canada combined out of the water. Basically that the aire of "I'm better than you because I go to Queen's" conceals the reality that much excess occurs in a small setting where one of the best things to do is get way too drunk/stoned etc. as a needed escape. I've known more than a few people that are endlessly impressed with the fact that they went to Queen's, a not insignificant number of which are not that exceptional. Pride is one thing but cockiness that isn't merited by ability is another, and maybe a slight dent will be put in that after this incident.

HJ,

I (almost) completely agree.

Its the times like this that I remind people I'm a McGill alumnus.

The letter in the Star from Ms. Fanjoy, a Queen's student who "is in no way condoning" the activities, but then proceeds to blame it all on the police, is just further evidence.

There's been a lot of blame from students placed on the police, mostly, but not entirely, undeserved.

More on that from me tomorrow perhaps.

As a Queen's alum, I must admit, this event was simply disgraceful, but what is with Hockey Jones' attack? The vast majority of Queen's students are intelligent, thoughtful, hardworking people. Obviously there is a contingent who loves to party too hard and are snobs, but this is true at every school, including UBC. Why you gotta hate so much?
